The Lana Del Rey backlash seems to have stopped in a kind of weird place. Just when it seemed like everybody was about to foreswear whatever promising assessment they had made about her career, the Saturday Night Live backlash hit and folks were prepared to be sympathetic to the singer. Then she went ahead and made that video with the eminently cool A$AP Rocky.
Now it looks like artist formerly known as Lizzie Grant is here to stay, and what better way to cement that than with a job modeling for H&M’s fall and winter collections. “The mood is very L.A. noir, ” said H&M creative director Donald Schneider to Women’s Wear Daily. We’re pretty sure though, that “L.A. noir” is Lana Del Rey’s whole thing, since she described herself as the “gangster Nancy Sinatra” a countless number of page views ago.
Del Rey also sang “Blue Velvet” for a short clip to premiere on hm.com Sept. 19, which definitely implies that the clothing brand is trying to capitalize on her image. All respect to Lana Del Rey, but if they were trying to brand away the middlebrow, they probably would’ve done a better job with any of the three ladies on the last cover of V Magazine. Just a thought.
